2017 Sea Harvest Sisonke Surf Challenge completed in sunny weather and fun surf at Dairy Beach last weekend

After enduring two weeks of inclement KZN weather surfers in the 2017 Sisonke Surf Challenge took advantage of the first two sunny days in a long time to enjoy some small but challenging waves at Dairy Beach in Durban last weekend.

The event, which attracted over 90 local surfers, was presented by Surfing South Africa and coordinated and organised by the Sisonke Surf Club.

Sisonke Surf Club member Sphe Shangase came fourth in the highly competitive U16 Boys Division and was the toast of his club mates as the Most Improved Surfer at the event. This award earned him a brand new surfboard sponsored by Biltsurf and R500 in cash.

SA Junior Team member and Sisonke Surf Club stalwart S’nenhlanhla Makhubu added her impressive list of results this year when she ended second behind her South Africa and eThekweni team mate Sophie Bell in the U18 Girls Division.

Another Sisonke Surf Club member who won’t forget this event was nine year old Njokoza Mahumulu who reached the U12 Boys Division semi-finals. Declaring that “this was the most fun contest he had ever surfed in” Njokoza added that he was looking forward to becoming the U12 champion next year.

The eight surfers who won gold medals the event were 2017 SA U12 Girls Champion Gabbi Herbst (U12 Girls), Nate Colby (U12 Boys), Luke Thompson (U14 Boys), Tide Lee Ireland, (U16 & U18 Boys) Sophie Beal (U18 Girls), Brandon Jackson (Open Men) and Teal Hogg (Open Women).

Sisonke Chairman Alvin Mtatshi and Vice Chairman Mikhail Vawda were overjoyed with the turnout of over 90 surfers who supported their club event and said that they were looking forward to working with Surfing South Africa in hosting more Sea Harvest Sisonke Surf Challenge contests in 2018.
