Mandela Bay Trophy goes the way of hosts Eastern Province as they win the 2009 SA Grommet Games at home.
The 2009 Reef Wetsuits SA Grommet Games, which was supported by funding from Sport and Recreation SA, was completed in fine offshore surf and excellent weather at the Pipe, Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth Sunday (April 12).
Over 100 girls and boys from six provinces took part in the annual event which is Surfing South Africa's most significant and important entry level inter provincial tournament.
Funding from Sport and Recreation South Africa ensured the success of the 17th SA Grommet Games, which remains one of the highlights of the annual Surfing South Africa event calendar.
Surfers were blessed with four days of sunshine and good 2 foot surf at Pollock Beach and all aspects of the tournament were completed without a hitch. The participants, who came from the rural villages of KZN and all corners of the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape, took the opportunity to enjoy themselves.
The SA Grommet Games is a tournament with a primary focus on transformation and development within the sport and provincial structures are set strict criteria when it comes to selecting their teams for the four days of competition.
While the main focus of the event is on surfing, participation in events such as a paddle battle, beach flags are also included in the activities. The most participative and successful team is awarded the Fair Play Trophy while the team that gathers the most points from all the activities are named the Champions of the tournament and take home the Nelson Mandela Bay Trophy.
KZN, who have put a huge amount of effort into their development programmes this year, were the most committed and supportive team at this year’s Grommet Games and were deservedly awarded the Fair Play trophy as the Best Team.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Trophy which is awarded to the provincial team with the highest combination of scores from the individual surfing results as well as the results from the Tag Team, Paddle Battle and Beach Flags, went to Eastern Province with defending champions Western Province just 300 points behind in second place. The Durban based KZN team’s efforts paid off when they moved up from last place in 2008 to third this year while Boland came fourth ahead of Border and Southern KZN.
In the individual categories Duncan Campbell of Boland took honours in the Under 16 Boys Division with Jessica Wilson of KZN winning the Under 16 Girls title. Ethan Pentz of Western Province won the Under 14 Boys final and Shannon McGee of Southern KZN came out on top in the Under 14 Girls Division.
The Under 12 Boys winner was Jose Faulkner of Eastern Province, Coral Jacobs of Southern KZN took the Under 12 Girls title, Adin Masencamp of Boland won the Under 10 title and Western Province surfer Max Elkington took the Under 8 crown.
The Surfer of the Contest Trophy was awarded to talented Adin Masencamp who won all his heats. Western Province retained their Tag Team title ahead of Boland with KZN third and SKZN fourth. In the Boys Beach Flags race Nkosi Bmovungani of Southern KZN took gold and Jessica Wilson of KZN won the Girls Beach Flags. The Boys Paddle Battle was won by Boland's Duncan Campbell and Shannon McGee of Southern KZN won the Girls Paddle Battle.
The members of the 2009 SA Academy Team will be announced by the Board of Surfing South Africa in due course.
