SA Champion to compete in Mr Price WP Open

Newly crowned South African Champion, Gavin Roberts, along with SA Masters team member and fellow Southern KZN surfer Gary Van Wieringen, are just a couple of the big-name surfers who will be competing in the Mr Price WP Open that takes place in the Cape Peninsula this weekend.

The WP Open, a 3A Men's and Women's and 2A Pro Junior Boys Pro Surf Tour event will see a host of South African surfers descending on a wintry Cape Peninsula as they go in search of invaluable Pro Surf Tour (PST) ratings points.

Also competing in the 32 strong Mens Division field is renowned Cape Town surfer Ian Armstong, fellow big wave exponent Matthew Bromley of Kommetjie and Shaun Joubert of Mossel Bay.

Meanwhile, newly crowned SA U20 Champion Tarryn Chudleigh of Kommetjie, SA Champs runner up Nikita Robb of East London and finalist Tammy Lee Smith of Salt Rock along with Melkbos surfers Stacey Guy and Chantelle Rautenbach lead the charge in the 3A rated Women's Division.

Heading up the 30-strong Pro Junior field are Brendon Gibbens, fellow Kommetjie surfers Mikey February and Bromley, Jaco Steyn of Melkbos, Joubert as well as Jacob Mellish of Somerset West, Chad du Toit of Durban and Chris Leppan of Umhlanga.

Robin de Kock, General Manager for Surfing South Africa, said it was absolutely fantastic to have the likes of Roberts and Van Wieringen taking part in what promises to be an epic event.

“With the swell expected to be in excess of 15 foot over the weekend the Mr Price WP Open will not be an event for the faint hearted,” De Kock emphasised.

Meanwhile, Team Red surfer Steyn said he was really hoping to take full advantage of his local knowledge of the various surf spots, with the WP Open using a mobile format which means that the best surf will decide the venue on each day of competition.

“I’m really looking forward to the Western Province Open as it is my sponsor’s event and also because it’s taking place in Cape Town. I know the waves around here pretty well so I’m aiming to make the finals.”

Surfers meet at Long Beach in Kommetjie at 7.30am on both Saturday and Sunday morning to decide the venue for each day. The venue will also be available on the Clickatel WP Surfphone 082 233 4001 from 8am each day.

The Finals will take place on Sunday and the Award ceremony will take place at the chosen venue immediately after the Men's final.
