The Awards Presentation for competitors, families and VIP’s will take place at the Ster Kinekor complex in George starting at 5pm where the Vic Bay event winners and the 13th annual Billabong Junior Series champions in all divisions will be crowned.
The names of the four Pro Junior men and one Pro Junior woman who receive the coveted invitations to the Billabong ASP World Championships in Sydney, Australia, will be announced, followed by the South African premiere of the movie ‘Still Filthy’ which won the award for Surf Movie of the Year at the 2009 Surfer Poll in California last week.
FORMAT: Heats consist of four surfers with the top two in each heat advancing to the next round until four remain to contest the final in each division. The ASP rated Pro Junior Men’s category sees the last eight compete in man-on-man quarter- and semifinals and a man-on-man final.
The finals in all divisions will be staged on Saturday 23 September.
The spectacular Von Zipper Air Show is run on the final day at each event. Competitors are judged on successfully completed high risk aerial manoeuvres performed in the air after launching, boosting or punting themselves and their surfboards above the wave, unlike conventional surfing where manoeuvres performed on the face of the wave are rewarded.
STATUS: The Billabong Junior Series is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA), the national controlling body for the sport. The results of the U16, U14 and U12 Boys events count towards the annual SSA Pro Surf Tour (PST) titles.
The Pro Junior Men’s and Women’s events are sanctioned by ASP Africa, the regional body for ASP International, with the results counting towards the annual ASP Africa Pro Junior titles. The top four on the yearend ASP Africa Pro Junior Men’s rankings and the top ranked ASP Africa Pro Junior Woman receive coveted invitations to the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships in Australia in January 2010.
PRIZE-MONEY: Over R103 000 in prize-money is at stake at Victoria Bay which will be shared by the top eight finishers in the Pro Junior events and the top four in each of the other age categories.
The Von Zipper Air Show offers a R2 000 winner-takes-all prize-purse.
SPONSORS: Billabong South Africa, the manufacturer and distributor of Billabong apparel and accessories, is the series sponsor.
Prizes will be awarded daily courtesy of Von Zipper, Kustom and Billabong.
