2010 Surfing South Africa scholarship recipients
Surfing South Africa announces names of 2010 Surfing South Africa Scholarship recipients
Seventeen surfers have been awarded surfing scholarships by Surfing South Africa (SSA) for 2010 thanks to a generous grant of R100 000 by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF).
The 17 surfers range in ages from as young as 10 to over 20 years-old and all are currently at school or studying at a tertiary institution. Education is a key qualification criteria in deciding the recipients while other criteria include identified, talented surfers who are financially or previously disadvantaged.
The 2010 recipients were recommended by their Provincial Associations and by Surfing South Africa officials who have watched their progress in a variety of competitions over the past year or so.
This year the group has been divided into three categories. There are five surfers in the 17 to 20 age group, seven in the 14 to 16 category and five are Under 14.
Bertie Stuurman and Dominic Abersalie of Pellsrus, Daniel Jeggels of Jeffreys Bay, Grant Arendse of Strandfontein and Holly Armstrong of Scarborough are the 17 to 20 year olds.
Brandon Benjamin of Retreat, Simpiwe Tokkoms, Junaid Sampson and Elroy Thomas of Muizenberg, Fika Ngubane and Siyabonga Khoza of Durban and Tosca Wynand of Macassar are the 14 to 16 year old recipients while Simo Mkhize of Umzumbe, Jose Faulkner and Rewaldo Abersalie of Pellsrus, Adin Masencamp of the Strand and Dillon Fernandez of Muizenberg are the under 14 group.
The allocated funds will be administered by Surfing South Africa and may be used to assist with education expenses, surfing equipment, entry fees to events and travel to and accommodation at sanctioned Surfing South Africa or Provincial tournaments.
In addition to the 17 scholarships allocated courtesy of NLDTF funding, two South African surfers and two Angolan surfers based in South Africa were awarded International Surfing Association (ISA) surfing scholarships earlier this year. The South Africans are Papi Makinyane of Muizenberg and Jarred Veldhuis of Kommetjie and the Angolan surfers are Roger Vuuanza and Benjamin de Castro who live in Muizenberg.
All the 2010 recipients will be easily recognized wherever they go as they will not only be wearing special kit that has been made exclusively for the scholarship surfers but they will also be riding surfboards with Lotto, SSA and South African flags on them.
Surfing South Africa is recognized by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, Sport and Recreation SA and the International Surfing Association as the governing body for surfriding in South Africa. SSA manages all domestic and ISA events and is responsible for the development of the sport as well as the selection of all national surfing teams.
The National Lottery Distribution Fund supports numerous SSA projects. |
