Mandela Bay Trophy goes the way of hosts Eastern Province as they win the 2010 SA Grommet Games for the second year in a row.

The 2010 SA Grommet Games, presented by Billabong and supported by funding from Sport and Recreation SA and the Lotto, was completed in contestable conditions over four days of competition at the Pipe, Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth Sunday (April 4).
Hosts Eastern Province took overall victory and the Mandela Bay Trophy for the second year in a row. Eastern Province also won the Tag Team title and produced four division winners which underlined their dominance of the 2010 SA Grommet Games.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Trophy is awarded to the provincial team with the highest combination of scores from the individual surfing results as well as the results from the Tag Team, Paddle Battle and Beach Flags. Western Province were the runners up once again while the Durban based KZN team retained third ahead of Boland who came fourth. Southern KZN were fifth, Southern Cape sixth and Border were seventh.
Over 150 girls and boys from eight provinces took part in the annual event which is Surfing South Africa's premier entry level inter provincial tournament.

Support from Billabong and funding from Sport and Recreation South Africa and the Lotto ensured the success of the 18th SA Grommet Games, which remains one of the highlights of the annual Surfing South Africa event calendar.

Surfers were blessed with warm weather and contestable surf at Pollock Beach and all aspects of the tournament were completed without a hitch. The participants, who were drawn from the Cape Peninsula to Richards Bay took the opportunity to enjoy themselves.
Hosts Eastern Province Surfing Council ensured a good start to the event at the opening function when top South African surfer Sean Holmes took time out to address the teams. Holmes, a two time SA Champion, Red Bull Big Wave Africa winner and World Surfing Games finalist had some words of advice for the young surfers who flocked to the Amphitheatre at the Boardwalk on Wednesday March 31.
Southern Cape Boardriders Association who have put a huge amount of effort into developing their provincial structures over the last 18months were adjudged as the most committed and supportive team at this year’s Grommet Games and were deservedly awarded the Fair Play trophy.

In the individual surfing categories Marshal Renze of Eastern Province took honours in the Under 16 Boys Division with Micaela Venter of KZN winning the Under 16 Girls title. Jerry Van Wyk won the Under 14 Boys final and fellow Eastern Province surfer Britney Linder came out on top in the Under 14 Girls Division.
The Under 12 Boys winner was Surfer of the Contest, Rewaldo Abersalie of Eastern Province, Anri du Toit of Southern Cape took the Under 12 Girls title, Max Ellington won the Under 10 title and fellow Western Province surfer York Van Jaarsveldt took the Under 8 crown.

Eastern Province beat defending Tag Team champions Western Province into second place with KZN third and SKZN fourth
Britney Linder of Eastern Province won the Girls Beach Flags and Stevan Rice of KZN took honours in the Boys Flags.
The Sportsmanship Award went to Gaby Lailvaux of KZN and special Performance Awards were made to Max Elkington and Dillon Fernandez of Western Province.
The SA Grommet Games is a tournament with a primary focus on transformation and development within the sport, and provincial structures are set strict criteria when selecting their teams for the four days of competition.
While the main focus of the event is on surfing, participation in events such as a paddle battle, beach flags and Tag Team is also included in the activities. The most participative team is awarded the Fair Play Trophy while the team that gathers the most points from all the activities are named the Champions of the tournament and take home the Nelson Mandela Bay Trophy.
