MR PRICE PRO BALLITO ATTRACTS SOUTH AFRICA’S TOP PRO JUNIOR SURFERS
The Ballito lineups of ‘Surfers’ and ‘Salmon Bay’ has attracted over 40 of South Africa’s top Pro Junior surfers to the Mr Price Pro Ballito Pro Junior which touches down at the world class surfing destination in KwaDukuza on Friday July 2 and ends on Sunday July 4.
Featured as part of the 2010 Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour (PST) the 6A rated event has a prize purse of R40,000 with the winner taking home R12,000 as well as valuable PST ratings points.
“We are delighted with the support Mr Price has put into the Junior PST this year and especially pleased with the boost they are giving the sport of surfing in our country,” said Robin de Kock, General Manager of Surfing South Africa.
“The Mr Price Pro Junior will be the biggest PST Pro Junior event that Surfing South Africa has sanctioned to date. The fact that it is part of the domestic tour means that local surfers are able to compete.”
Local favourite and Mr Price Western Province Open champion Beyrick de Vries will be tough to beat as he takes on the country’s best just north of his home break at Umhlanga.
“With so much money at stake and so many PST points available the Mr Price Pro Junior is super important,” said de Vries. “The prize money can help with my international travel costs and I’m stoked that the event is happening in my backyard.”
With his eyes firmly on the junior title de Vries will also be contesting the Mr Price Pro Ballito from July 5 -11 and will be hoping to cause major upsets in the ASP 5 Star event.
Other juniors competing in Ballito this weekend include the Kommetjie group of Davey Brand, Matthew Bromley, Michael February, Brendan Gibbens and Jarred Veldhuis while Durban surfers Shawn Dennis Devin Lane and David van Zyl are all capable of winning the title.
Surfing South Africa (SSA) is recognized by Sport and Recreation South Africa and the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee as the governing body for surfing in South Africa. SSA is a member of the International Surfing Association (ISA) and coordinates and sanctions the domestic Pro Surf Tour.
