SEMIFINALISTS DECIDED IN BALLITO
BALLITO, KwaDukuza Saturday July 3, 2010 – Beyrick De Vries (Umhl) kept his foot flat on the performance pedal obliterating his quarterfinal heat to best his best mate Jacob Mellish (Swes), advancing into the semifinals on day 2 of the Mr Price Pro Ballito.
Securing an early lead with a pair of good scoring rides, De Vries picked up a great looking wave in the dying seconds of the heat, performing a double grab air to post a near perfect 9.50 (out of ten).
“Jacob and I are best friends an I wanted to call him onto that wave but it was in the last few seconds so I had to go. I gave it all I had and landed that air,” De Vries said. “That wave was so good anyone could have done it.”
Holding down both the highest wave and heat totals of the event so far, De Vries advanced with a 16.50 (out of a possible 20.00) and will meet fellow advancing quarterfinalist Hayden MacNicol (Scott) in the semi finals.
The depth of South Africa’s future surfing talent was revealed with the likes of up-and-coming big wave surfer, Matt Bromley (Kom) showing his class in the smaller surf to edge out David Van Zyl (Dbn) and advance into the semifinals.
“I’ve haven’t had a win yet this year so I’m stoked to make it another step forward and I’m amped to go far in this contest,” Bromley said.
Making a name for himself at big wave spots from Sunset Beach, Hawaii to Dungeons in Cape Town, Bromley proved that he is just as fired up in the small surf as he is in the big.
“I strive to surf well in all kinds of conditions and these smaller waves sharpen you up for the big stuff, the two support each other well.”
Chad Du Toit (Dbn) and Dale Staples (CStfr) endured a seesaw battle in their quarterfinal clash, Du Toit emerging as the eventual victor narrowly edging out Staples with 10.50 to 9.40 (both out of 20.00).
“It’s always good to win the see-saws (battle’s) but it was tough out there,” Du Toit said. “You needed a little bit of luck for the wave to hold up and allow you to get the scores.”
Earning his place into the event as an alternate surfer on Friday, Du Toit has had plenty of luck on his side something he’ll be hoping takes him all the way into tomorrow’s final.
“I was lucky to get into the event yesterday and I’m just trying to have fun and enjoy myself, I think that’s where you get your best results. I need to get a win this year so hopefully I can take this one out.”
In the Women’s division it was Sarah Baum (Warner Bch) who captured the crowd’s attention completing two textbook performances to earn her spot into the semifinals.
Enjoying a dream start to her Mr Price Pro Ballito campaign, Baum posted a near perfect 9.50 (out of ten) during her round of 16 clash and showing technique beyond her years went on to advance into the semifinals.
Baum advanced in second place after being narrowly defeated by Tarryn Chudleigh (Kom) during the round of 8.
The second heat of the Women’s Round of 8 saw experience win over youth with Alice McGregor (EL) and Stacey Guy (Melkbss), the two more experienced campaigners, advancing ahead of Emma Smith (Jbay) and Heidi Palmboom (Bluff).
The 6A Mr Price Pro Junior Boys and Pro Women’s events culminate with the finals of both divisions tomorrow, the first of the semifinals kicking of at 08h00. Conditions look promising for an epic finish with light offshores in the morning and a 1- 1.5-meter swell predicted.
