Sophie Bell Does the Double Despite Shark Incident at Buffalo City Surf Pro presented by Reef Wetsuits

Sophie Bell achieved a rare double on Monday when she won both the Women’s and Junior Women’s events at the Buffalo City Surf Pro presented by Reef Wetsuits in challenging conditions at Nahoon Reef in East London.
The 16 year-old from Salt Rock’s phenomenal feat in the World Surf league (WSL) rated events was all the more dramatic when the Women’s final was halted after spectators spotted a Thresher shark leaping out of ocean less that 100 metres from the finalists.
Officials immediately put the event on hold as Bell and her opponent, Australian Tayla Hanak, made their way to shore and a jetski collected Steven Sawyer and Michael February, who were about to start the Men’s Final, from the lineup. READ MORE…

Broken Boards Eliminate Favourites as Nahoon Reef Continues to Pump
Sunday saw a full day of high performance surfing competition at the Buffalo City Surf Pro presented by Reef Wetsuits as local and international participants battled to stay in contention for the finals day on Easter Monday.
The competitors reveled in the 1.0 to1.5 metre waves that continued to pour through at Nahoon Reef producing big scores for some and upsetting several of the favourites who struggled to find two good rides or broke their surfboards in the still powerful surf.
The day’s proceedings started with the remaining four heats in the Junior Men’s event before the opening round of the Women’s event, the Men’s Round of 32, the quarterfinals of Junior Women and Men and finished up with two heats of the Women’s Round of 16. READ MORE…
