Eight South African Junior Surfing Titles and the Freedom Cup up for grabs in the 2018 Sea Harvest South African Junior Championships.
The 2018 Sea Harvest SA Junior Surfing Championships, the country’s most prestigious annual surfing event for competitors aged 18 and under, gets underway in the famous high performance waves of the Lower Point in Jeffreys Bay on Wednesday October 3rd and runs until Sunday October 7th.
The official Opening Function will be held in the Sea Harvest tent at Lower Point in Jeffreys Bay at 7pm on Tuesday October 2nd.
A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of National Colours to the 2018 South African Junior Team who will compete in the ISA World Junior Championships in California at the end of October.
The team was selected after participating in the Sea Harvest Junior selection trials in Port Elizabeth at the end of July.
The 22nd edition of the South African Junior Championships will showcase the top young surfers from every corner of the coastline who qualified for the tournament via tough selection trials run by their respective District organisations.
At stake are individual national titles for Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 boys and girls along with the coveted Freedom Cup, which was introduced in 2003 and goes to the district whose team members accumulate the highest points tally across all age divisions.
In 2017 the strong Cape Town Surfriders team narrowly beat their traditional rivals, eThekweni Surfriders to win the coveted Freedom Cup.Nelson Mandela Bay Surfriders took honours in 2016 and are determined to win it this year but both Cape Town Surfriders and eThekweni Surfriders have selected impressive teams and the battle for overall honours will be close.
Buffalo City Surfriders have also picked a strong side and could challenge the favourites while Cape Winelands Surfriders, Eden Surfriders, UGU Surfriders and Ilembe Surfriders have all sent solid teams to Jeffreys Bay.
Also participating at the Sea Harvest SA Junior Championships this year is a group of surfers who make up the SA Development Academy Team. This team comprises surfers who are part of Surfing South Africa’s Rising Stars programme. The objective of their inclusion in the event is to ensure that they get an opportunity to be part of Surfing South Africa’s premier junior surfing contest.
Most of the 2017 Champions who will be back to try and win another title. They include Kirsty McGillivray and Kai Woolf (Nelson Mandela Bay),Eli Beukes and Kyra Bennie (Cape Town Surfriders), current Open Champion Zoe Herbst and SA Junior teammate Mitch du Preez (Buffalo City) and Gabi Herbst (eThekweni).
All the members of the South African Junior Surfing Team will be representing their respective Districts in Jbay.
Also taking their place among the over 200 competitors at the championships are Sea Harvest Surfing Excellence Award winners Dellin and Zia Hendricks and Angelo Faulkner (all Nelson Mandela Bay) and S’nenhlanhla Makhubu (eThekweni).
In addition to the Freedom Cup and individual titles, there are a number of specialty awards up for grabs. These include the Loud and Proud Team Spirit award which is awarded to the Team that shows the most spirit at the event. A male and female Surfer of the Contest will also be announced at the Award Ceremony on Sunday October 7th.
