The 2018 Sea Harvest South Coast Gromcomp presented by South Coast Tourism takes centre stage at St Mikes this weekend
St Mikes on the KZN South Coast is regarded as one of the best was in South Africa when it is firing and over the past ten days St Mikes has been doing just that.
Surfers competing in this weekend’s Sea Harvest South Coast Gromcomp presented by South Coast Tourism will be hoping that St Mikes will continue to produce the goods for this weekend’s 1A Rated SA Surf Tour event.
Over 60 of South Africa’s Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 Boys and Girls will be in action from midday tomorrow as they compete for over R15000 in prize money and valuable SAST ratings points.
Four members of the South African Junior Team which will travel to Huntington Beach in California at the end of October to compete in the ISA World Junior Championships are among the competitors.
They are Durban based Luke Thompson and Tide Lee Ireland, who will compete in the U16 Boys Division, Gabi Lailvaux of Westbrook and Kayla Nogueira of Umhlanga who are in the U16 girls division.
Liam Gerber Melkbosstrand is top seed in the U16 boys Division with Brad Scott of Kommetjie seeded second. Thompson is the third seed.
Local girl Jesse Powell is top seed in the U16 Girls division. Lailvaux is the second seed and Sarah Scott of Kommetjie is seeded third.
Thompson is top seed in the Under 14 Boys Division with Christian Venter of Melkbosstrand seeded second. Matt O Brien of East London is third seed in this division.
The highly competitive Under 12 Boys Division has attracted the same number of entries as the Under 16 group and the top seed here is Joel Fowles of East London.
Josh Malherbe of Coffee Bay and Leon Bezuidenhout of East London are the second and third seeds respectively.
Anastasia Venter of Melkbosstrand Sarah Scott of Kommetjie and Meka Loots of East London are the top three seeds in the Under 12 Girls Division.
Originally scheduled as a one day event, the Sea Harvest South Coast Gromcomp will now get under way at midday tomorrow (Saturday September 1st) to cater for the large number of entries.
Thirty five heats will be held over one and a half days and the five Finals will be run between midday and 3pm on Sunday.
Sunday’s rounds will begin at 8am.

The 2018 Sea Harvest South Coast Gromcomp is presented by South Coast Tourism and sanctioned by Surfing South Africa, the recognized national governing body for the sport. Surfing South Africa is a member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), the African Surfing Confederation (ASC) and the International Surfing Association (ISA).
