Waves for Change www.waves-for-change.org is a long-term intervention project for at-risk ocean side communities. The aim of the initiative is to empower participants to become leading advocates and role models to their peers and to effect a profound change in the way young adults perceive HIV, the stigma attached to the disease and clarify the issue of safe sex. Through its coach training, Waves for Change aims to train a new generation of community leaders to address social issues endemic to South African township life.
Umthombo Street Children www.umthombo.org is an organisation that empowers street children and offers them alternatives to street life. Its overall aim is to change the way that society perceives and treats street children in South Africa. Umthombo’s surf programme is an engagement programme designed to initiate the transition of street children out of street life.
A significant segment of the contest is the Battle of the Wave which is open to all under surfers in the Under 18 age group. This contest is intended to raise awareness of the valuable work being carried out by Cape Town’s unique Shark Spotters Programme aimed at finding the middle ground between white shark conservation and concerns of the public. About twenty Shark Spotters are employed to work at nine of Cape Town’s most popular beaches and the R50 Battle of the Wave Surf Session entry fee will be donated to this programme.
