The Surf Emporium Western Province Interschool’s Championship and Battle of the Wave was completed at Surfers Corner, Muizenberg in bright sunshine and perfect offshore conditions yesterday (Sunday September 30) just in time for the surfers to participate in the Earthwave World Record attempt for the most surfers on the same wave.

Rainy weather on day one of the event did nothing to dampen the spirits of the girls and boys who represented the 20 schools and 27 teams. With parents, family members, friends, teachers, curious onlookers and the Lets Play Siyadlala cameras in attendance there was plenty of action both in and out of the ideal 2 to 3 foot conditions.

After two days of enjoyment, fun and chaotic competition the contest eventually concluded with Wynberg Boys High and Wynberg Girls High winning the Boys High School and Girls High School finals respectively and St James Primary taking honours in the primary school final. All three teams won computers which will be donated to their schools

In an exciting tag team final Wynberg Boys High posted a combined team score of 98.3 beating second placed Heathfield High School by just 1.8 points. Eastern Cape visitors Woodridge College came third, Umthombo from Durban were fourth and Masiphumelele A came fifth.

Wynberg Girls High beat a composite school team into second place with the International School taking third. St Cyprians came fourth.

St James Primary beat a hard working Sun Valley A team into second place with Sweet Valley third and Christian Davids school fourth. As recognition for their dedication and determination, especially as they were the youngest team in the tournament, Sun Valley A were also presented with a computers for their school.

The two day Interschool’s championships provided young surfers from a variety of backgrounds with an opportunity to represent their schools, meet other surfers, strike up friendships and share in their passion for surfing and certainly inspired social cohesion amongst young South Africans from all backgrounds. .

The contest formed part of the 5th edition of the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival which was successfully held at Surfers Corner.

The Surf Emporium Interschool’s Championships were sanctioned by Surfing South Africa and supported by funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

Surfing South Africa is the recognised governing body for surfriding in South Africa and is a member of both the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the International Surfing Association (ISA).
